HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Basketball was invented by James Naismith. Basketball originated in 1891 when a future Presbyterian minister named James Naismith (1861-1939) was assigned to teach a physical education class at a Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith invented Basketball because they needed a sport to play indoors for the winter because it was too cold to play baseball or football outside. It was first used in 1891 at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball: 1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. 2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist. 3. A player cannot run with the ball.
